Project Description
The 50-acre Big Lake Trail and Meadow is the culmination of effort by The Trust for Public Land to restore an area which was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The Big Lake Trail and Meadow is at the southeast corner of the beautiful 1300-acre historic City Park. The shallow lake was hand dug in 1896 in the shape of Lake Pontchartrain. TPL began the project two years ago and the $1.5 million project was supported through the generosity of hundreds of individual donations. Featuring a new dock and boat house located off Friedrichs Avenue on the north side of Big Lake. Visitors on the weekend, can rent a paddle boat or a small row boat (oar driven) and cruise the lake an botanical gardens! off Friedrichs Avenue and on the weekends you can rent a paddle boat or a small row boat (oar driven) and cruise the lake and the botanical gardens! Keeping you company will be the numerous ducks, geese and swans, that reside at the lake!
